ALDA Statement on the Parliamentary Elections in Serbia
The European Association for Local Democracy – ALDA welcomes the parliamentary elections held in Serbia on 25 October 2026 and the strong participation of citizens. A high turnout shows that people want to take part in decisions about their future. This is the basis of every democracy.
ALDA believes democracy is strongest when institutions listen to the voice of citizens and respect it. Free elections, open dialogue and trust between people and their institutions are values we have promoted in Serbia since we opened our first Local Democracy Agency in Subotica in 1993.
We congratulate the movement of the students for their resilience over the past two years and for the good result they achieved in these elections. Their commitment shows how young people can take an active and responsible role in the democratic life of their country.
Elections are an important moment, but democracy does not end on election day. It continues every day through the way institutions work with citizens, through the space given to civil society, and through the chance for people to be heard in their own communities. We hope the period ahead will be marked by dialogue and cooperation among all actors, so that citizens’ trust in their institutions can grow and the expectations expressed in these elections can be met.
ALDA will continue to work with local authorities, civil society and citizens in Serbia to strengthen local democracy and citizen participation, as part of Serbia’s European path.
