Strengthening the Capacity of Local Governments to Support Informal Waste Collectors
The Joint UN Programme "PRO - Local Governance for People and Nature"
The Centre for Democracy Foundation organised regional workshops in Valjevo (11 December 2024) and Sremska Mitrovica (16 December 2024), in collaboration with United Nations agencies, to enhance the capacity of local governments to support informal waste collectors as part of the UN programme ’PRO – Local Governance for People and Nature’.
Discussions with representatives from cities and municipalities focused on employment opportunities, development planning, social inclusion, anti-discrimination measures, family planning, and healthcare services.
Through these regional workshops, support is being provided to local governments to strengthen their governance capacities, which includes developing and implementing relevant local public policies and normative frameworks tailored to the needs and challenges faced by waste collectors and other vulnerable groups.
These efforts aim to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for informal waste collectors and other marginalised groups, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected.
The Joint UN Programme is implemented by the United Nations Serbia agencies - UNOPS, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNEP, in cooperation with the Government of Serbia and with the financial support of the Government of Switzerland. In the period from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2026, the Programme will implement activities through provision of technical assistance, capacity building and grant support for projects, which will be selected through competitive processes within public calls.
