Gender Equality – A Priority for Academia, Independent Institutions, and Civil Society
Promotion of the New Master’s Programme in Law and Gender
“For us at the Centre for Democracy, launching this new master's programme demonstrates our commitment to human rights. We firmly believe that a society is only as free as its women are. This master's programme is an academic response to the rigid traditional framework that is not gender-sensitive, and it is essential that it is widely accessible to all those working in legislative fields,” stated Nataša Vučković, Secretary General of the Centre for Democracy Foundation, at the promotion of the new Law and Gender master’s programme, organised on Thursday, 19 September 2024, by the Faculty of Law at the University of Belgrade, with support from the Commissioner for Equality and the Centre for Democracy Foundation.
The programme aims to advance a gender-sensitive approach to legal studies and higher education as a whole, and to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality in advancing human rights and the rule of law. It also represents a vital contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN's 2030 Agenda focused on quality education and gender equality.
Participants in the event included: Prof. Dragica Vujadinović, PhD, Coordinator of the LAWGEM project; Augusta Featherston, Senior Adviser on Human Rights and Non-discrimination, OSCE Mission to Serbia; Brankica Janković, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality of the Republic of Serbia; Dr. Nina Kršljanin, Vice-Dean for scientific and professional work, University of Belgrade Faculty of Law; Nataša Vučković, Secretary General of the Center for Democracy Foundation; Ana Memeti, Teaching Associate, University of Belgrade Faculty of Law.
The master’s programme Law and Gender was developed as part of the Erasmus Plus Strategic Partnership in Higher Education project, implemented by the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade, in collaboration with academic institutions from the European Union (EU), with the support of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and the Center for Democracy Foundation.
