DIALOGUE IN THE CENTER

Dialogue has been our goal and our method from the very beginning.

Immediately after the Foundation was established in 1994, we launched the magazine Dialogue, whose editorial board brought together philosophers and sociologists, journalists and publicists, historians and writers, politicians and civic activists. The first dialogue with representatives of Kosovo Albanians, held at the international conference Democratic Processes and Ethnic Relations which we organized, was published in the magazine.

Aware of the fact that there can be no democratic society without open and tolerant discussion, we were the first in Serbia to offer a platform that has, for 20 years, successfully brought together the most prominent intellectuals, civil society activists, political parties, public office holders, trade unions and workers, journalists, artists, students, young people, and the broader interested public.

Creating a culture of dialogue in a space torn by divisions is difficult, but day by day we prove that it is possible. We have connected different sectors of society, from decision-makers and business to universities and civil society, and by promoting freedom of speech and expression we have involved citizens in discussions on development, politics, and culture. Through expert yet engaging analyses of public policies, we have sparked the interest of young people and vulnerable groups in social issues. We have established monitoring of the long-term effects of public policies on society and created a reservoir of ideas for sustainable development on the path toward our main goal – preparing society for European integration. POLITEIA

Regional School for Youth Participation

The idea of Politeia originated in early 1997, during a time of significant civil and student protests. The student energy for democracy inspired us to contribute more long-term to the development of democratic potential in the young generation. We believed this was a condition without which serious and sustainable democratization of the country could not be expected.

Over time, Politeia became a true brand of the Center for Democracy. The high-quality curriculum, public calls for applications, a large number of applicants among students, activists, and young politicians, a creative and stimulating environment, interactive learning, and the dedication of lecturers, moderators, and volunteers all contributed to this school gaining a reputation as one of the most popular non-formal educational programs in our region. BLACK AND WHITE

Contribution to the Improvement of Socio-Economic and Labor Rights

Black and White is the name of our public campaign from 2012 to 2014, during which we advocated for the reduction of informal labor and greater and more efficient protection of labor rights in Serbia.

For over 10 years, Black and White has been an important presence on social media, where good practices were exchanged, discrimination was pointed out, and violations of rights were highlighted.

Today, we use the Black and White brand as a trademark for projects advocating for the improvement of labor rights. (Read more…)

How does civil society view Serbia’s progress in European integration?

The public reading of the European Commission’s Report on Serbia, organized by the Center for Democracy Foundation and the Center for Contemporary Politics, with the support of European Western Balkans, has become a tradition for a specific reason – it provides citizens with a unique opportunity to learn where our country stands on its path to the European Union.

Year after year, we strive, through democratic and open public discussion, to contribute to a better understanding of the EU integration process, more effective reforms, and stronger public support for Serbia’s European path. We present findings on the current state and give recommendations for improving reforms in key areas such as, among others, democratic institutions and public administration reform; judiciary and fundamental rights; justice, freedom, and security; economic and monetary policy; social policy and employment; foreign, security, and defense policy; environmental protection. We contribute to the development of democracy, advocate for Serbia’s and regional European integration, influence sustainable socio-economic development, and empower the citizenry to actively participate in community decision-making.
