Stop Pressure and Intimidation of Serbian Citizens
National Convention on the European Union
The National Convention on the European Union condemns the creation of an atmosphere of panic and intimidation ahead of the public gathering in Belgrade, scheduled for Saturday, March 15th, organized by students participating in the blockade from across Serbia.
Peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights, guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, as well as by international conventions and commitments Serbia has undertaken in the process of European integration.
We therefore call on all relevant authorities to act professionally, impartially, and in accordance with the law, ensuring that all citizens can participate in this gathering without fear. Any misuse of institutions for the purpose of intimidating citizens or attempting to delegitimize the event is inconsistent with the democratic standards that Serbia aspires to uphold on its path to EU membership. Furthermore, we remind the public that similar gatherings, organized by the same groups in Novi Sad, Kragujevac, and Niš, have taken place peacefully and without incident.
The National Convention believes that respect for diverse opinions and human rights are core values Serbia must embrace to become a full-fledged EU member. In a time of deep societal polarization, responsibility lies with those in power who make decisions and enforce regulations. The media, in line with their legal obligations, have a particular responsibility not to contribute to or spread panic among citizens.
Therefore, we urge all relevant institutions to act responsibly and ensure an environment where citizens can exercise their rights free from pressure and fear.
