International Day of Democracy
Statement by the Center for Democracy Foundation on the International Day of Democracy
Democracy: The Only Political System that Can Guarantee Every Citizen’s Dignity and Participation in Community Affairs
Today, in a time when public trust in democracy and responsible governance is seriously undermined, the Centre for Democracy Foundation asserts that democracy has no alternative. Despite its attributed weaknesses, democracy remains the only political system that can guarantee every citizen's dignity and participation in state affairs.
Civil society and the citizenry must consistently demand the strengthening of democratic institutions, democratic oversight of the executive, and citizen participation in the decision-making processes of their communities. Citizens must elect their representatives in free and fair elections and be unhindered in expressing their opinions through free and open media.
The inclusion of all segments of society, especially vulnerable and marginalised groups, in development planning and opening development perspectives is one of the main objectives and methods of any democratic decision-making process.
For 30 years since its founding, the Centre for Democracy Foundation has been dedicated to the development of democracy and the rule of law, promoting European values, strengthening democratic institutions and procedures, and improving and respecting human rights and civil liberties.
