CDF: Stopping Attacks on Civil Society and Youth Activists
A statement issued by the Center for Democracy Foundation in response to the article in the daily newspaper Politika titled “Bjelic's NGO KOMS funded by Germans”.
The Center for Democracy Foundation urges state authorities and the media to cease attacks and unfounded criticisms of civil society organisations and youth activists. Such attacks have become increasingly frequent and intense in recent days, which is unacceptable in a democratic state and a country aspiring to become a member of the European Union.
The Serbian Youth Umbrella Organisation (KOMS), the Forum of Civil Action - Forca in Požega, and their member and activist Ivan Bjelić are honourable and authentic representatives of civil society. Civil society in any country is a vital segment in community development and serves to both construct and preserve democracy, the promotion of the rule of law, human rights, and to ensure pluralism.
We remind everyone that the establishment and functioning of civil society organisations, citizens’ associations, and youth alliances are regulated by laws and other legal acts of the Republic of Serbia, including the financing of their projects which aim to achieve positive societal changes.
We firmly stand in defence of the people’s right to free association, freedom of assembly, freedom of thought and expression, and strongly oppose any intimidation, threat, and violence. Respect for and protection of the human rights of all people is crucial for the proper functioning of a democratic society.
