CDF: Support for the demands of trade unions to increase minimum wage
Minimum wages must follow the real cost of living and enable a dignified life for employees and their families
The Center for Democracy Foundation provides full support to trade union demands regarding negotiations on increasing the minimum wage in Serbia for 2023 and 2024.
Minimum wages must follow the real cost of living, to ensure a dignified life for workers and their families and to mitigate the risk of further deepening poverty in Serbia, which is already alarmingly rampant.
High inflation (12.5% according to SORS data) and constant price increases have resulted in a large number of employees, in particular those with the lowest of incomes, that are unable to meet even their basic existential needs. The average minimum wage of RSD 40,020 is far below even the minimum consumer basket, which was RSD 51,874.39 in May of this year.
We especially note that the minimum wage by way of its nature should be the exception rather than the rule, and statistics show that unfortunately, it is the reality for a large number of Serbia’s inhabitants (Report on the Condition of Labour Rights in the Republic of Serbia for 2022, p. 26).
We remind you that, according to the Employment Act, the minimum wage is determined through negotiations within the Social and Economic Council, starting, among other things, from the existential and social needs of employees and their families. We therefore call on social partners to make additional efforts to ensure employees are enabled a dignified life through an adequate increase in minimum wage.
