The 5 of October - An Important Day in Serbia’s History When the People Chose Democracy and Europe
Nataša Vučković, Center for Democracy Foundation and Aris Movsesijan, former President of the New Party, spoke about the symbolism of the 5 of October, it’s meaning and the reasons for despondency on the Between Us (Među nama) talk show which aired on channel Nova S.
“On the 5 of October there was a serious amount of enthusiasm among the people of Serbia, evident in every segment, while we prepared for the elections. Simply put, change was in the air. The entire population and all the institutions were ‘getting ready’ and this energy could be felt nation-wide. With the 5 of October, an end had finally come to the regime that had taken us down a path of abject poverty, exposed us to sanctions and bombing, had created a vast array of problems the new government was tasked with resolving quickly”, said Nataša Vučković.
We are still living with the consequences of that former regime, she said, even if we are unaware of some of them. This applies particularly to our youths, who weren’t around to live through the 5 of October. Nevertheless, this was a huge date in Serbian history, a day the people chose democracy and the European way.
When asked about whether or not the main changes resulting from the 5 of October have been able to survive the last 22 years, Vučković responded by saying that some have and some have not.
“Some great results that were achieved have either trickled away into nothingness or are former shadows of what they once were, but the fact remains that the enormous amount of effort made by those who came into power after the 5 of October was directed at restoring order within the country”, Vučković reminds us.
